Midlayers: the critical element

The proper midlayer will generally correct the deficiencies of the outer layer. We have several fundamental criteria in our approach to midlayers: they should be wearable as outers in benign weather, they should be effective at moisture management , ideally they should be windproof, and the insulating layers should be warm when wet. If possible, and within the budget, they should be flame retardant or at least diminish melt hazard. We provide many of the solutions needed. With regard to those garments that offer protection from melt hazard it is important to bear in mind that protection must start from within – it is no good to offer flame retardant outers and not have similar properties in the inner layers. In fact, it is better to have flame retardant inner layer than flame retardant outer with no inner protection.

1514 FLAME RETARDANT ANTARTICA SHIRT. We now only offer our standard short as flame retardant. The fabric used is a circular knitted nomex/wool with the aramid fibre confined to the outer surface of the fabric. The zipro-treated wool crumbles before ignition, so there is no melt hazard. The shirt is styled with rolltop neck that can be worn unzipped as opened collared. The long tail on the back of the shirt maximizes retention of body warmth. The thumbcuff detail has been imitated by many, but matched by none. The woolen inner surface of the shirt gives remarkable insulation and moisture mangement. Sizes S-XXL ANTI-MELT HAZARD

The Antarctica wool in non irritant (hercoset treated), and warm-when-wet. The merino yarn is soft and supple – these are properties that modern fabrics fail to imitate.

4014 STOWAWAY SHIRT: Windproof and water resistant, the highly compactable item has now been on the market for several years, in use mainly by Special Forces. 1023 FLAME RETARDANT SWAT SHIRT: Ultra-light nylon ripstop outer and flame retardant wool inner lining, this zip access shirt is the modern technology version of our MAMMOTH shirt. Also features: handwarmer cuffs with the thumbhole that turns the cuffs into a half glove: long tail and side vents. Sizes S=XXL. ANTI-MELT HAZARD.

1024 MAMMOTH SHIRT: With ripstop outer windproof fabric and a heavy inner pile, this shirt offers the best of the old technology. It possesses a unique double front pocket – one is a handwarmer, the other is only for storage. Side-vent zips are essential for this extremely warm item, which also possesses waist-adjustor, neck adjustor and cuff adjustor. Sizes S-XXL.
